Lawn Care Tips for Between Visits
Even when we’re not on-site, your lawn and home still need regular attention to stay healthy and pest-free. At FAIRELL PEST & LAWN LLC, we want to help you stay ahead. Follow these expert tips to keep your yard looking great and your home protected between our scheduled visits.
1. Mow Regularly (and Properly)
-
Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time.
-
Mow when the grass is dry to avoid clumping and uneven cuts.
-
Keep mower blades sharp for a clean cut that reduces stress on your grass.
2. Water Deeply, Not Frequently
-
Aim for 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall.
-
Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation and discourage fungal growth.
-
Avoid daily shallow watering—it leads to weak, shallow roots.
3. Watch for Weeds
-
Pull weeds when they’re small to prevent spreading.
-
Spot-treat with a lawn-safe herbicide if needed.
-
Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can encourage weed growth.
4. Keep Debris Off the Lawn
-
Remove leaves, branches, and grass clippings regularly.
-
Too much debris can lead to disease and attract pests.
5. Keep Pets Off Treated Areas (When Applicable)
-
If you use your own treatments or after a recent service, follow wait-time instructions before letting pets or kids on the lawn.
Pest Prevention Tips for Your Home
1. Seal Entry Points
-
Check doors, windows, and the foundation for cracks or gaps.
-
Install door sweeps and repair window screens to block insects.
2. Eliminate Standing Water
-
Mosquitoes breed in still water. Empty buckets, planters, and birdbaths weekly.
-
Clean out clogged gutters and downspouts.
3. Keep the Kitchen Clean
-
Wipe down counters, sweep floors, and store food in sealed containers.
-
Take out trash regularly and clean under appliances.
4. Manage Outdoor Lighting
-
Use yellow “bug lights” outdoors to attract fewer insects.
-
Keep lighting directed away from entry doors.
5. Trim Plants & Shrubs Away from the House
-
Keep bushes and tree branches trimmed at least 12–18 inches from your home’s walls and roof.
-
Overgrowth can serve as a bridge for ants, roaches, and rodents.
